St. Ignatius of Loyola as a Soldier

16th century

Although the inscription says this is a vera effigies or true-to-life portrait, it actually collapses the two phases of Loyola's life. In the first he was a soldier in armor and a "Don," according to the inscription below his family's coat of arms. In the second he was a zealous teacher of the faith, with the "IHS" form of Jesus' name on his breast and an "S" for "Saint" on the bottom inscription.
